Week-Long Summer Camps

for Youth Ages 10-15+

REGISTRATION DEADLINE:

June 1ST, 2023

I will be facilitating a series of week long summer camps at my home in North Durham where I have a small animal sanctuary and art studio. All programming will offer engaging educational programming focused on hands-on application of creative and practical skills.

Weekly Schedule:

  • Camps will run Monday-Friday at my home from (9am-3pm).

  • I offer an extended day option from 3pm-5pm if desired.

SLIDING SCALE PRICING

Please self-assess what price category is feasible for your family. Full cost price is geared toward families for whom paying this amount for camp does not require major changes to a household budget or financial stress. Sustainable pricing is geared toward families who are not able to make the the full cost payment without significant financial stress or budget changes, but can affordably cover this baseline rate. Solidarity pricing is slighty below what I need to cover all costs, however, that is why we have a sliding scale :)

  • Full Cost : 300$/Weekly

  • Sustainable: 200$/Weekly

  • Solidarity: 150$/Weekly

*If the solidarity pricing rate is out of reach financially, please contact me regarding barter or worktrade options. I often need support maintaining my animal sanctuary and gardens, and am always happy to come up with a creative solution whenever I am able.

EXTENDED DAY PRICING

I offer an extended day option at the rate of 15$/hr per young person. I am available from 3-5pm on any camp day to provide extended day options and will confirm these upon camp registration. You are can enroll for as much or as little extended day as you want to.

If extended day fees put undue stress on your household budget, I offer scholarship rates upon request.

*If you have any problems accessing the sign up form linked above, please email me (billy.dee@insightcolearning.org) and I will send you the registration info directly.

Students will have a chance to make a mixed-media artwork or art installation that will be shared at the end of the week. Guest speakers (via zoom or in person, depending on availability) will meet with students to talk about life as a professional artist and what that entails and answer questions.

*Both AM and PM sections will involve a combination of outings, artist visits, and hands-on art making, but the AM and PM sections will be distinct (visit different locations, different guest artists, etc.) so that the morning and afternoon sections will complement each other.

  • 7/17-7/22: Artist Books

Camp will culminate in a small original artist book designed by each camper.

    PM Section: Focus on Bookbinding

Campers will create a hand-bound artist-book with a selection of fine art papers using a Coptic Stitch Binding technique. Once they have bound their book, students will collage, draw and paint in their book to make a unique work of art.

  • 7/24-7/28: Observational Drawing/Creative Sketch booking

Campers will learn about creative practice through observational drawing (drawing from life) and working creatively in a sketchbook.

AM Section: Focus on Observational Drawing

Campers will spend time in nearby local parks and community spaces noticing what draws their attention visually, and learning how to draw from life with a range of art materials through a series of guided drawing exercises. This camp will support students who want to create “realistic” drawings. Camp will culminate in a more fully developed final drawing of chosen subject matter with the support of the instructor.

PM Section: Focus on Creative Sketch booking

Unlike the focus on observation or “realistic” drawing skills of the AM section, the afternoon section will focus on how we can creatively interpret what we see. Campers will notice what draws their attention in various settings (such as nearby parks and cafes) and will follow creative drawing and writing prompts which encourage them to interpret what they see. Sketchbooks will be full of found poetry, comics, sketches, doodles and collages by the end of the week. The afternoon section will be focused on exploring creative ways to observe and engage with the world through open-ended creative experimentation.

Private/Small Group Art Lessons:

In addition to summer programming, I offer private and small-group art lessons. Please get in touch if you would like to learn more!

Portfolio Development & Support for Rising Juniors and Seniors:

I offer one-on-one support and guidance to rising high school juniors and seniors who are interested in pursuing study in fine arts at the college-level. I can work with students to develop a visual art portfolio and navigate the application process for school. I can also help demystify what an education in the visual arts actually entails, and the wide range of potential pathways available for students who want to study in this field.

*(This service is offered on a sliding scale basis to ensure accessibility, no one turned away for lack of funds).
